Special Campus Recruitment Program-Scholarship Camp

The Special Campus Recruitment Program-Scholarship Grant is one of Petron's programs in its Bataan Refinery (PBR) to help shape the next generation of Filipino engineers.

"The program is our way of giving back to the academe and the country. By prepping tomorrow's engineers today, we create bigger career opportunities for them in their homeland and keep them from seeking 'greener pastures' abroad after graduation," Petron Refinery Vice President Freddie P. Yumang says.

In partnership with the country's top universities, Petron provides scholarships to engineering students who have passed its rigorous evaluation.

"Selected from thousands of applicants, we consider our scholars the crème de la crème of their respective schools," says Petron Refinery Audit and Management Systems (RAMS) Manager Boyet P. Uapal who is spearheading the program.

The scholarship package includes full tuition fee, monthly living allowance, and annual miscellaneous academic expenses. Part of the scholarship is the opportunity for the select apprentices to train in the refinery. Mr. Uapal adds that "by allowing scholars the chance to apply lessons learned inside the classroom in an actual work environment, we believe that we are further enhancing their acumen as engineers."

The recruitment program also opens career opportunities for outstanding scholars taking up Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering to work in PBR after graduation.

PBR also welcomes engineering professors into the Bataan refinery to expose them to its facilities and operations, so that they can convey what the refinery is all about to their students. Henceforth, future engineers will have a better appreciation and a deeper understanding of the oil industry, especially of the downstream petroleum business.

"Our partnership with the best engineering universities in the country goes beyond providing scholarship grants. Through it, we are opening ourselves and the gates of PBR to the academe," Mr. Yumang says. "We envision our partnership to be long-lasting. Thus, the academe can be assured that Petron will be there for them for the long-term."

To date, Petron's partner universities are Mapua Institute of Technology, Adamson University, University of Santo Tomas, St. Louis University, and University of the Philippines in Diliman and Los Baños.
